The Maproom

About the Maproom

You stop in the doorway to study the floor. At first, the platform in the center appears to be floating in a bottomless abyss, but as you look closer, you can see that it is actually stone, blacker than a moonless night, with no flaws, no imperfections, no cracks and polished to a silky sheen that seems to swallow the light. Etched into the surface are fine tracings of some complex geometric design, though from where you stand, you can't quite make out what it is.

You edge one foot out onto the floor. Nothing happens, so you take a couple of steps. Then a couple more, until you reach the wooden platform. It is only about six feet to a side but nearly as high. Wooden steps wrap around two sides before bringing you to the top. A desk with a map open on it occupies one side of the platform. On either side are low, deep shelves containing more maps. A... thing... made all of bronze gears and rods and hinges is mounted atop the desk. A series of progressively smaller lenses, several colored, step down from a hole in the dome overhead. As far as you can tell, sunlight is filtered through the lenses and reflected through mirrors inside the... thing... and shines through a final lens set in the center of a compass suspended just the map on the desk.

The map doesn't look familiar... you move the compass-lens thing out of the way, carefully touching only the small grip on the side of the compass that appears to be made for just such a purpose. The room seems to spin wildly and you grab the edge of the desk. The moment you release the compass, the sensation of motion ceases but the floor is now an image of the portion of the map directly beneath the compass-lens. You move the compass again, slowly this time, and the view on the floor shifts. The arm the compass is mounted on bumps a quill in a stand on the front corner of the desk. It falls over the edge of the platform and vanishes as it touches the floor.

You suspect that there is now a feather quill laying on the ground somewhere in... you check the map... County de Whittemere. This could be handy. If only you could find... you rifle through the maps and pull out one that says Court of the Fey in bold script.... Yes. This could take you anywhere in the keep, instantly....
