A. Purpose & Definition

1. Environment: Fantasy And Legends Organization (FALO) is a fantasy role-playing organization based on myths, legends, and contemporary fantasy set in a fictional world. In this world we have created, we act out fantasy lives through fictional personas of divergent races, skills and backgrounds. The period of time we emulate ranges from the early classical civilizations through the European Renaissance, with a stronger concentration on the Medieval period. The types of personas portrayed in FALO are typically a cross between myth and history, such as Elves, Fairies, Druids, Bards, Wizards and the like. These fantasies are enacted through storytelling, interactive role-playing and written exchange in our own fantasy realm. FALO is an outlet for creative energy. Members of FALO try to explore, develop, encourage and inspire creativity in themselves and others. Among the other activities, FALO members sing, dance, play live music, feast, and practice skills from the appropriate time periods, such as sword-fighting, archery, woodcraft, etc.

2. Social Structure: FALO is a social group in which members have close personal ties to one another. As such, we do not have an open membership. Members and guests to our functions are hand chosen by the group or its leadership. Our group is often referred to as "clan" to signify this close-knit bond.

3. Content: FALO is an adult group whose purpose is to have fun in a mature setting. Minors are permitted at certain times if they are accompanied by a guardian, but no minor is eligible for membership. As an adult group, certain behavior, such as drinking alcoholic beverages, singing bawdy songs or displaying violence in the course of role-playing is to be expected (and accepted) by those who attend our functions.

4. Expression: FALO is not a vehicle for the expression of moral, religious, political or sexual causes that extend beyond the realm of fun or fantasy role-playing. Campaigning for these and other such issues is in direct conflict with our reason for existence.

5. Acronym: FALO is an anagram for Fantasy And Legends Organization, and is used for simplicity’s sake when speaking mundanely about our organization to members, guests and total strangers. Falo also is the fictitious name of our clan in character, and means “of the heart.” Therefore, characters who speak of the clan of Falo, are referring to the Clan of the heart, what we call ourselves in character. This dual use of the word allows for seamless use and reference of the organization, whether it be used in role play or in the mundane world of reality.

6. Guests: FALO tries to maintain a close-knit, clan atmosphere and, as such, we are highly selective. Many guests who attend functions for years are welcome, even if they never become members.

B. Membership

1. Age: Only individuals over the age of 18 years will be considered for membership.

2. Prospectives: Candidates for membership, known as prospectives, must acknowledge and abide by all of FALO's rules and policies.

3. Focus: Members must have an understanding of, and a deep interest in, subjects concerning medieval and/or contemporary fantasy. They must have a desire to participate in the recreation of fantasy/medieval characters and settings (i.e. roleplay). Strong candidates for membership will also demonstrate an interest in the ‘behind-the-scenes’ workings of FALO and will strive to strengthen the clans foundation.

4. Characters: Individuals seeking membership must have a single, defined "persona", a character whom they portray at all FALO functions. The details of this persona must be put in writing, and a FALO questionnaire must be submitted by a mentor to the elders for approval before further consideration for membership can be made. The persona must conform with the ideals of the group, although there is much room for creative interpretation on the part of the candidate. Evil characters are forbidden, as is slavery. The elders have final say on all major attributes of each persona to ensure compatibility with our fantasy environment. It is the responsibility of the prospective’s mentor to acquire and file this paperwork through self-initiated, direct contact with the elders.

5. Clan Support: A majority of FALO's current active membership must be comfortable with a prospective in order for the prospective to be considered for membership. Members are chosen by a majority vote of the elders with this consideration in mind.

6. Loyalty: FALO seeks members with a high level of commitment and not nominal members. While memberships in parallel groups are not strictly prohibited, first loyalty to FALO is expected, and such membership may impact a prospective’s chance of obtaining membership in FALO.

C. Stoneholder Rights & Responsibilities

1. Definition

a. Hierarchy: All members of FALO are considered to be Stoneholders, as signified by the welcomestone given them upon acceptance of membership. Those Stoneholders who have not yet become moonstoneholders shall be referred to as welcomestoneholders. All rules that apply to welcomestoneholders shall apply to all members.

b. Characters: Each member must have one, and only one, fixed character that is played as a member of FALO. A member is not permitted to change that character to a different character for any reason. While alternate personas are permitted for special purposes on a short term basis, this alternate character may not attend any FALO function for the full duration of that event , without prior permission from the council of elders and strict adherence to the guidelines for such an instance (see D.2.e). FALO members must attend the meeting as their primary character, except as allowed in D.2.e below. Any use of an alternate character at FALO functions must be approved by the elders in advance of that function. Characters may be altered as they mature and progress in their lives and careers, but the fundamental natures of the characters, their names, and their pasts may not be altered.

2. Rights

a. Participation: Stoneholders have the right to participate in all FALO functions as long as they have paid their annual dues and the appropriate event fees. These events will be announced through mailings or prior meetings, and in some cases, verbal contact. All stoneholders are also eligible to serve as thanes and Springfest Ministers.

b. Courtesy: Stoneholders and their guests must be treated in a courteous manner by all attendees of FALO functions.

c. Guests: Where applicable, Stoneholders are entitled to bring a spouse, significant other, and/or children to FALO functions. This right does not extend to the invitation of other guests, which is reserved for moonstoneholders only.

d. Ðaoine Sidhe: All Stoneholders are entitled to receive current copies of FALO's newsletter, Ðaoine Sidhe, which will be distributed at FALO functions or mailed at the discretion of the newsletter staff.

e. Expression: All Stoneholders have the right to express their opinions to the elders regarding matters of Rule and Policy without fear of retribution, harassment or ridicule. While the elders make the final decisions in all cases, FALO respects the opinions of its membership and maintains an "open door" policy for the expression of views and opinions. Such expression may be made to individual elders or the council as a whole through written or verbal correspondence or in person. Such expression is also permitted through written forum or similar articles submitted to Ðaoine Sidhe, so long as they conform to the newsletter policies.

3. Responsibilities

a. Dues: All Stoneholders are required to pay annual dues by High-Summer of each year. Cost of dues are determined by a unanimous vote of the elders.

b. Clan Participation: Welcomestoneholders must work toward the honor of moonstoneholder through active clan participation, including but not limited to, role-playing, event preparation, committee activity, written or artistic contribution to Ðaoine Sidhe, development of character, strict adherence to the Laws of FALO and encouragement and assistance to other Stoneholders and guests in all other regards.

c. Springfest: All Stoneholders must serve on a ministry at FALO's annual Springfest.

d. Rulings: All Stoneholders are required to abide by the rulings of the council of elders. Failure to do so may result in temporary or permanent loss of membership privileges.

e. Contact Information: Stoneholders are required to provide each of the elders with a current physical address, email address, and phone number where applicable.

f. Gather Attendance: Stoneholders must attend at least two gathers between High-Summer and High-Summer.

g. Honor of FALO: All Stoneholders are expected to uphold the honor of FALO. This means that at all times the Stoneholder will keep before them the ideals and goals of FALO. While “honor” can be fairly intangible, many of these ideals and goals are found in the By-Laws, Etiquette Guide, Character Guide, and Guild Charters. Many more are evident in the very fabric of the world of high-fantasy we create.

h. Courtesy: Stoneholders and their guests must treat other Stoneholders and their guests with courtesy.

4. Revocation

a. Dues: Failure to pay dues by the registration date of the annual Springfest will result in cessation of all mailings, including but not limited to invitations and copies of Ðaoine Sidhe. Members who have not paid dues by High-Summer are not permitted to attend FALO functions until dues are paid. Failure to pay dues by December 31 of each year will result in revocation of membership.

b. Attendance: Members who fail to attend a minimum of two FALO functions per FALO Fiscal year (High Summer to High Summer), may be subject to revocation of membership at the discretion of the elders.

c. Violations: Members who violate the Laws of FALO may be subject to disciplinary action deemed appropriate by the elders, up to and including revocation of membership and banishment from all FALO functions forevermore. These situations shall be judged on an individual basis by the current elders. Execution of such disciplinary measures will be handled only after the individual has had a chance to state his or her case to the elders.

d. Execution of Termination: Termination may be accomplished in writing only if the accused individual refuses to meet or speak with the elders concerning the alleged infraction or fails to respond to mailings and phone messages from the elders.

D. Moonstoneholder Rights & Responsibilities

1. Definition

a. General: Moonstoneholders are those Stoneholders who have been FALO members for at least a year and a day, have completed a FALO File approved by the elders, and have epitomized the membership ideals of FALO.

b. Selection: Moonstoneholders are chosen by a unanimous vote of the current elders.

2. Rights

a. General: All moonstoneholders will enjoy all of the rights available to welcomestoneholders.

b. Guests: Moonstoneholders are entitled to invite up to five guests to each FALO function, as applicable to the event or site. New guests to FALO functions must read and abide by FALO's by-laws, Etiquette Guide and Character Guidelines from the Handbook, which will be available at most FALO functions, or on the Internet, which is available at all times.

c. Mentorship: A moonstoneholder may mentor up to two prospectives at any given time.

d. Voting: In the event that a "Clan Vote" is held for decisions that affect FALO, a moonstoneholder may cast one vote. Moonstoneholders may be polled individually, where appropriate. In cases where a discussion is necessary, only moonstoneholders present at the discussion may cast a vote. The elders must provide prior written notice that such a vote is to be held, and a majority of current moonstoneholders must be present for such a vote to take place.

e. Alternate Personas: Moonstoneholders may attend an entire gather as an alternate persona with the advance permission of the council and in adherence to the following guidelines:

  • The alternate persona must be another member’s guest

  • The gather does not count toward the member’s required two gathers per year

  • The moonstoneholder must make substantial effort to create an alternate persona that does not resemble their primary character

  • The council must be notified at least one gather prior to the event

  • No more that two moonstoneholders per gather may play alternate personas for the entire gather, and both alternate personas must be related to the same roleplay

f. Privileges: Moonstoneholders shall be given special consideration over welcomestoneholders when it comes to unique or special entitlements, including, but not limited to a reduction in fees for FALO functions and eligibility for eldership. In addition, only moonstoneholders are eligible to serve as mentors and reeves.

3. Responsibilities

a. General: In addition to those listed below, all moonstoneholders have the same responsibilities as applied to welcomestoneholders.

b. Service: Moonstoneholders are the core of FALO, and as such are required to give of themselves in a greater capacity than a welcomestoneholder. Because of this, moonstoneholders are called upon to serve as mentors, reeves, thanes, and ministers and should be more willing to head ministries, submit to Ðaoine Sidhe, host events, and perform other major tasks.

c. Growth: It falls to the moonstoneholders to help our clan grow. Therefore moonstoneholders should help in the recruitment of potential members by inviting good people to FALO functions and serving as mentors to worthy prospectives. All moonstoneholders are responsible for the actions and behavior of their guests.

d. Environment: A moonstoneholder must have a single, fully defined character and actively role-play at FALO functions. It befalls the moonstoneholders to demonstrate and promote good role-playing. The moonstoneholders set the example for Stoneholders and guests, and as such must exemplify the merits of being in character at FALO functions.

e. Involvement: It is the moonstoneholders' responsibility to initiate constructive dialogue with the elders regarding current clan issues and prospectives.

4. Revocation

a. General: Except as follows, moonstoneholders may have their memberships revoked under the same rules that apply to welcomestoneholders.

b. Inactivity: Moonstoneholders who fail to meet their obligations in the opinions of the elders shall be considered inactive moonstoneholders. inactive moonstoneholders will lose moonstoneholder privileges and receive only welcomestoneholder rights until such time as they fulfill their obligations, at which time they will automatically revert to active moonstoneholder status.

c. Revocation: Inactive moonstoneholders who remain so for an additional year shall be strictly subject to the rules of revocation applicable to welcomestoneholders.

This questionnaire will typically be filled out under the guidance of the mentor.
